Tips for reusing and recycling our packaging
After plenty of research and a lot of thought, we've concluded that polypropylene (PP) sleeves are currently the best option for protecting our products from water damage in the post. You can read more about our reasoning for that choice here.
The ultimate sustainability of our plastic packaging depends on what you do with it once it's served its purpose. Here are some tips for making the most of it.
Reuse it
Reuse is always better than recycling and one advantage of PP bags is their strength. They're like the Duracell bunny of the plastic packaging world. Treat them gently and don't strain the side seams, and you can reuse your packaging to your heart's content.
Here are a few ideas:
DIY erasable note paper - Print out a To Do list, shopping list, daily checklist or anything else you use repeatedly and seal it inside the bag. Now you can use a wipeable marker (these are our favourites - Staedtler link) to jot things down and wipe away to reuse it. Perfect to stick on the fridge.
Sticker storage - Use to store and organise your stickers, refill sheets, and other planner-related bits and bobs.
Window cling - Open the bags and stick to your windows then use permanent markers to draw your designs on. Ideal for temporary Halloween or party decorations.
Artwork gallery - Hole punch the bottom of the bag (for portrait) or side (for landscape) then thread onto a curtain wire (like these IKEA ones - link) to make a wall-mounted gallery to display your children's artwork. It's easy to swap the pictures over when you need to. The bags are surprisingly resilient used alone but you can also reinforce them with paper tape before punching the holes. It's MUCH easier to punch the holes if you fold a piece of scrap paper around the edge first.
Suncatchers - Draw and colour a design on the outside with Sharpies and stick on your window for a lovely stained glass effect. Even if you're not artistically gifted, it's easy to get perfect results by tracing over a colouring page placed inside the bag.
Mess-free Painting - Put some paint splodges onto a piece of paper and place inside the bag. Seal VERY well (extra tape is recommended) and stick to a table. Your toddler can now "finger paint" through the bag, mixing the colours without making a mess everywhere. This also works without the paper and with the bag stuck to a window.
Custom packaging - If you happen to have a heat sealer handy, you can use it to transform our bags into bespoke packaging for smaller items. But please note that our bags are not food-safe.
DiscboundUK packaging - If you can't find a use for them yourself, feel free to send your used packaging back to us and we'll use it again if it's still suitable. (If not, we'll recycle it for you.)
Please feel free to send us any other suggestions! We'd love to hear them. And once you've had your fun, remember to recycle...
Recycle it
Please recycle our bags locally if facilities are available - they should become more widespread in the UK soon. If not, feel free to send them back to us and we'll happily recycle them for you.
